Angelo Gaja forever changed the world scene of Piedmontese wines when he first released this historic wine in 1985, made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes planted in the small town of Barbaresco. Legend has it that Angela Gaia’s father, when he learned that his son had planted Cabarnet Sauvignon in vineyards previously reserved only for the Piedmontese traditional grape Nebbiolo, exclaimed “darmagi!” (in translation; “What a disgrace”). Because of his respect for and those all before him, the younger Gaia decided to call this wine Darmagi, in honor of his family’s heritage, but with a view to the future.
