CHATEAU CANON, 2020

385,00

This is intense, structured and concentrated yet with an abundance of violet and peony notes that curl up through the tannins, combining halfway through the palate with blueberry, raspberry, tobacco, gunsmoke and sculpted, precise pulses of chalk minerality.

REGIJA / REGION

Bordeaux is a wine region located in southwestern France and is home to the world’s most famous winemakers. It has a century-old tradition, and the wines of Bordeaux were enjoyed by the ancient Romans. There are 14,000 wine producers and 117,514 hectares of vineyards around the city of Bordeaux.

The region is close to the Gironde River and the Atlantic Ocean, which is why it has a maritime climate. The ocean and river bring mild winters and warm summers and long sunny autumns. The region is protected from strong ocean winds with a dense pine forest that runs parallel to the region. Due to the river and ocean, the region has calcareous soil with clay and sand, which is an extremely suitable soil for growing vines.

Bordeaux is best known for its red wines and noble sweet wines, but high-quality white wines are not far behind. Bordeaux red wines have a unique expression of the region that is recognizable all over the world. The most common black varieties that are grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec. The most common white varieties are Sauvignon blanc, Semilion and Muscadelle. The classification of Bordeaux wines began in 1855. The Bordeaux vineyards are divided into five regions; Entre-Deux-Mers, Libournais, Bourgeais-Blayais, Gravec and Medoc.

O VINARIJI / ABOUT THE WINERY

O VINARIJI / ABOUT THE WINERY

Jacques Kanon purchased the vineyard in 1760. He earned his fortune as a privateer and was closely associated with Quebec.

He sold the estate about a decade later to the Fontemoing family, who held it until 1857.

The estate was only officially named Château Canon in 1853. Intriguingly, the name may not come from M. Kanon per se, as the Fontemoings also owned a property called Château Canon in Fronsac.

The 1959 vintage is seen as an icon of the estate, and even received 95 points from Robert Parker: a remarkable feat for a wine made from very young vines just a few years after the great freeze in Bordeaux in 1956.

Canon was purchased by fashion giant Chanel in 1996, and the company set about renovating the cellars and vineyards with the aim of modernizing the brand. Much of the Cabernet Sauvignon was ripped out in favor of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which were more suited to the limestone and clay soils.

This revamp happened concurrently with that of Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux. This is also owned by Chanel.
